1989 // Taylor Swift

I've been thinking what do I want to blog about this time before I go into all the thanksgiving and new year resolution kind of post.. And I thought that it would be appropriate for me, as a swiftie, to promote the album on behalf of Taylor Swift. I mean, READ ON, even if you hate Taylor. I think it is impossible to hate her 100%, so unless you hate her THAT much, please continue reading this post.

I'm going to review the songs on her latest album titles '1989'. It is titled that way because, obviously, that was the year that she was born in. On the first hearing of the album, I didn't liked many of the songs.. Probably the ones that caught me was Style and Blank Space, which until now is still one of my favourites. The other songs I grew to love them the more I listen to it. I'm listening to the songs as I'm typing the review, so to get the full experience, listen to it while reading it too! :)

#1 Welcome To New York
From this first track, you can tell that this album is going to be very different from the others that she had ever published. The first time I listened to this song, I thought that the verse was too.. Autotuned or Electronic for my liking. Then it went to the chorus that goes "it's a new soundtrack I could dance to this beat forevermore.." that's like one of my favourite line in the whole song. And then the more I listen to this song, the more I came to accept that it is not a bad song after all.

This song is basically about her moving to New York and all.. I've never been there so I don't know.

#2 Blank Space
Okay first and foremost, I fell IN LOVE with this song the moment I hear it. It is like love at first sight, but in a form of a song. Hahah! And the thing I absolutely love about this song is the level of sarcasm. The media always portray Taylor as someone that is jumping from one boyfriend to another boyfriend and then crushing their heart and then goes all emo and crazy about them. So Taylor literally went into that character and wrote out this song..

I love how she says ".. got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you im insane" it is like.. exactly how the media pictures her. and my most most favourite line of it all is "CAUSE DARLING IM A NIGHTMARE DRESSED LIKE A DAYDREAM" I love this line because somehow although it is meant to be sarcastic, this is how I feel about things sometimes, or how I feel about myself in situations, or with people. Other than that, the whole melody and everything is just perfect for my taste.

#3 Style
Okay, so the first time I hear this song was a clip on Target's commercial for Taylor's album, they played the chorus of the song then blurs it out with Taylor herself talking over the song saying to get the album at Target.. But nevertheless, the chorus is exactly my kind of music. Happy, pop, cheerful :) It give the same vibe as 22 for me...
Some of the lines are kind of parallel (to me) such as:
"everything's gonna be alright if we just keep dancing like we're 22.." and
"And when we go crashing down, we come back every time, we never go out of style"

So this is a song I would play when i'm just having a chill out happy time with my girlfriends or just a happy occasion.

#4 Out Of The Woods
This song was released before the other songs.. And initially, I really didn't like it as much. And honestly I still don't love it as much as Blank Space and Style. The reason is simple - because of the repetitive chorus. I don't exactly love repetitive things because it makes me feel like you have nothing else to say and so you decide to repeat the line a few more times just to fill in the 4-liner in a chorus.

But I started to love the song when I tried to play it on the guitar, the verse is actually not bad.. I'm still actually tying to overcome my dislike for the chorus. But meh, there are just that 1 or 2 song in every album that I don't like as much as the other songs.

#5 All You Had To Do Was Stay
This song.. I think it is the kind of okay-okay song for me, simply because I cannot relate as much to this song as much as I can relate to the other songs. Except for this one line in the song that I can relate to and that is "why did you have to lock me out when I let you in". I don't know about you, but the way I read this line is.. Why did you not open up your life to me when I let you into my life and I tell you all my deepest feelings and secrets. Other than this line, the other parts of the song I cannot exactly relate..

Melody and lyrics wise, I think that the melody is better than the other more monotone tracks in the album.

#6 Shake It Off
This song is the first one to be released in the album, my initial thought on this song was like WHY DOES IT SOUND SO MUCH LIKE HAPPY BY PHARRELL? then now I think about my first reaction, I think that i'm very wrong. And the first time I listen to it, I didn't like it.. I don't know, probably the trumpet or something, or the fact that it started with a minor chord, that's why it sounds weird. But after listening to it a few more times.. My reaction to this song was like YES AMEN PREACH IT GURL.

I mean the lyrics are so real, and raw. You know it. She's basically shaking off whatever bad things that people say about her, all the rumors about her, the critics that judge her for her songs, her dancing and everything. And like what she said in an interview "You don't like me being who I am? Watch me be who I am more." LIKE BAM! This is it, this is the song, this is the Taylor Swift that we all have been waiting for. I love how she repeats "that's what people say" because really in life, some things aren't real and just because people say it, suddenly it becomes real and applicable? Think about it.

#7 I Wish You Would
This is also one of the song that didn't appeal to me at the first listen, but it was okay-okay, not much hate. I don't think I ever went through a phase of missing someone till the extent of thinking and wishing that he/she would come back. So once again, another song that I am unable to relate to, and hence it is further away from my heart.

The melody and beat of this song is something very unique, and I realize that it is not easy to play this song on guitar because of the odd beat of the song. Plus, this song is pretty much of a tongue-tie, hahah!

#8 Bad Blood
This is like a WAR SONG for all the swifties. From the very beginning of the song, it sounds almost like a tribe chant. Hahaha, we all have the BAD BLOOD. and this song, I can relate to half of it I guess? Like how someone affects you.. and from some mad love, it turned into bad blood.

Initially I didn't like the song too much, but I guess now I'm okay with the song :) It is not my favourite, but it is an okay song. I think this song is comparable to I Knew You Were Trouble, except that the feel of the song is different.

#9 Wildest Dream
Finally a more slow-paced song in the album.. This song give me the very dreamy feel, or like a song that came from thoughts right before you sleep (you know those times when you head is running wild?) and she gathered it all together and made it into a song.

I don't exactly get the context of the song, again. But the melody and beat of the song, I like.. it is very.. STEADY :)

#10 How You Get The Girl
I love the beginning of the song because of the guitar, this song is also one of those that caught my attention at the first listen, but I didn't love it as much. It is just one of the better songs in the album I guess?

I love the chorus very much, I mean this whole song is almost like a recipe to get the girl.. (Disclaimer: The below method might not work for every single girl)
I want you for worse or for better
I would wait for ever and ever
Broke your heart I'll put it back together
I would wait for ever and ever

The thing is that if someone would wait forever for you, it might be a sweet thing or it might just be the thing to pull you back. If someone told you that he would not ever get married because he is waiting for you.. how would you respond? But then again on another hand, if you cannot get together with someone for temporary reasons and that person says that he would wait, then that sounds pretty much like the sweetest thing on earth, do you get me?

Anyway, love the fact that this song is happy and so upbeat! Thumbs up for upbeat songs!

#11 This Love
The secret message behind this song is that timing is a funny thing.. The first time I listened to this song, I know that i would learn to love this song but not at the very first listen, that happens to me all the time.

These hands had to let it go free
This love came back to me

It's like just when you let the thing go, it comes back to you. funny, isn't it?

#12 I Know Places
Here's another song I didn't like initially but now I LOVE THE SONG. like my top 5 in this whole album.. Love the melody so much. Although there were lots of minor chords on this song, it is still a nice song to me. This is one song I can't explain why I love, Hahaha! i just somehow love it!

#13 Clean
This song. woah. I can't even begin to say how meaningful this song is. Clean meaning you are OVER the relationship with someone else, and then Taylor Swift, the queen of bridge wrote the best bridge of all time.

Ten months sober I must admit
Just because you're clean don't mean you don't miss it.

I love this because it is true, even though sometimes you are over a relationship with someone, you just miss having a person there for you to tell your things to, you miss having someone to have fun with, you miss having someone to hug. But despite all these, you are still clean and over it. You know what I mean, you know what Taylor meant.

#14 Wonderland
This song became one of my faouvrite simply because of the pre-chorus..
I love the line where it goes:

Didn't they tell us don't rush into things
Didn't you flash your green eyes at me
Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds?

And recently, this bunch of lyrics became applicable to me and so I love the song.

#15 You Are In Love
The melody of this song is so simple, and yet it is such a beautiful song. I dont think I have heard this song enough to really review much.. But I just love the lyrics and how it gets stuck in your head :)

#16 New Romantics
This song feels almost like a part 2 to Shake It Off to me.. Initially I didn't like the song, the moment I heard it, i felt that it was a very Katy Parry-ish song, but I grew to love the song because of the lyrics. POWER OF WORDS ;)

#17 - 19 Voice Memo
I just thought that it was nice that taylor included these voice memo, and from some of the voice memo, you can really hear how her voice have changed and improved over the years. So yes, I am proud that i'm a fan of taylor swift :D
