TEACHERS' DAY 2014! So this year is officially my first year celebrating Teachers' Day, as a teacher! How does it feel? I think it feels like my birthday. LOL, you know where you receive presents. Yeah. Except that I receive a lot more presents on Teachers' Day than my birthday. As for my N1 class, the teachers decided a theme - Superheros! The children were all told to dress up as their favourite superhero or character. Salute those that actually have really really nice costumes. Anyway, the teachers decided to come up with the superhero theme because we agree that teachers are the superheros! :) Here's a really nice pic of me and the form teachers :) Indeed, I feel that teachers are really the unsung heros that (really) should be appreciated more. If you're reading this and you're a parent, think about this: If you think handling your 2 kid at home is hard, try handling like 15 of them. Especially when there are 15 different backgrounds where they are from, 15 different way of communicating, 15 different learning styles, 15 different mood, 15 different likes, 15 different dislikes, 15 different strengths, 15 different weaknesses. Every day in class, (form) teachers have to plan lessons that best helps the children to learn and also have fun at the same time. If something is too boring, they'll talk and wonder around. If something is challenging, some might be turned off to it while others steps up to the challenge. There are slow learners, fast learners, those with short attention span, those that throw tantrums, those that simply finds everything too easy, those that don't even know what you are speaking because they do not understand your language, those that requires 1-to-1 attention, those that simply isn't interested in the theme or topic. Problems like these arises every single day, and yet somehow, teachers always finds a way to overcome it. Or at the very least, try to improve the situation and not let it happen again. Teachers use the chirpiest tone of voice even though deep inside they are boiling hot like lava, they shower children with love more than they do to themselves, the teachers always tries to find the best in each child even though sometimes really it is hard to do it, teachers go down to the children's level to understand them, teach them, open up their mind to the world that they have yet to discover. My journey as a teacher has just begun, as compared to so many other teachers, I'm really just a baby budding one. From January till now, I've learnt so much working with both the small and big children. I've learnt how to change diaper, how to put on clothes, how to help them wear their shoes, how to talk to children, how to get their attention as a whole, how to be relatable, how to be firm with them, how to listen, how to resolve conflict, how to ask them questions, how to make them reflect, how to make something that really is quite horrible into something beautiful, how to encourage a child that is disappointed, how to coax a child that is crying, how to talk to a child that is throwing tantrums. I may not be the best, but I'm still learning. Everyday I try to not just go through the motion, but as much as I can, make a difference. If not a big one, then a small one. People should learn to appreciate teachers more. Every day they meet the needs of so many individual lives. Every day they chase after your children. Every day they clean up their mess. Every day they impart different skills. Every day they try to do their best - because working as a teacher it is not about us, it is about the children. Nothing makes us happier than a smiling and learning child, one that is inspired and so ever ready to learn, one that is curious to find out more. And nothing is more rewarding than a big kiss and hug at the end of a day and a sweet little "thank you". You don't have to wait till Teachers' Day to appreciate the teachers. They should be thanked every single day for the effort. Teachers all have their own lives, own problems, but when it comes to work, we put it aside because these children have a whole day of opportunity to learn and we won't want to miss out on that. So go out there and thank the superhero that you know. The one that helped you (or your child) when there is a need, when you could not be there for yourself or your child. To all the teachers I know, words cannot express how much of a superhero you are to me. You are the ones that make an impact on the future generation. You love, even when your love tank is running low, you always try your best, turn up for work even when you are sick; smile even when your heart is broken. The endless hours of research, planning, and execution of your lessons have made a difference, in ways you never know. Thank you, and thank you a million times. :) Never stop growing, never stop learning! |
