HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE!

Yesterday was August 9th, which also means that it's Singapore's birthday! :) So here's 10 things that I love about Singapore:

1. Location & Accessibility

I mean, just look. Singapore is actually quite centralized among all the Asian countries and even Australia! Your airplane flight to another Asian country usually doesn't exceed 10 hours which is very very good. And another good thing about Singapore being THIS small is that everywhere is accessible! Especially when MRT are constantly being built, you can get from one place to another usually within 1.5 hours via public transport. Unlike what you usually hear in the America, one place to another is about a 2 or 3 hour DRIVE. What?

2. Education System

Many people complain about Singapore not appreciating the arts education and everything. But I think we should learn to be thankful that Singapore even makes primary education compulsory. If a child hits 4 year old and is not being sent to a kindergarten or childcare, then the local authorities will by all means send the child to school even if the family isn't able to afford it. I think we should also be happy that Singapore has one of the best universities in Asia (hence the competition), and we don't have to travel to other countries to study in a good university.

3. Food

Admit it, this is the part where you go absolutely jelly. And whenever you travel, the thing that you'll miss the most about Singapore is the food. I love the Singapore is basically filled with lots and lots and LOTS of food! Besides the food from our 4 races, you can easily find Mexican food, French food, just about anything you want, you can find it here! Just head down to Bedok Hawker Center or Chomp Chomp at Serangoon Gardens, you'll find exactly what you're craving for!

4. Cleaniness

I'm really thankful that Singapore is a very clean country. You see, most of the time you will see probably just a little bit of maybe tissue paper or plastic cans here and there. It's quite rare that we'll see things like this:

Yes, PROBABLY you will see these in back alleys or some places where NOBODY goes there. But generally on the streets, it is clean! If you've been to other countries with all these rubbish just at the road sides, you'll know why I love the Singapore is so clean. :)

5. Safety & Security

Yes, Singapore has strict rules. But it's still for the general safety of everyone that lives in this little island. I feel safe in Singapore because I know that 24/7 there will be people on guard. Be it the Air Force or Navy or Police Force, there will not be a time in the year where it is their off-duty. Personally, I love Singapore for the street lights. I love that it is literally EVERYWHERE. I still remember the time when I went Bangkok and they only had lights at the main streets.. So I was so scared that I didn't really want to leave my hotel room whenever it is past sunset because it is just so scary and there will be mice and cockroaches everywhere on the streets.. :/

6. Mixture of races/religion

It's really quite amazing how we just adapt to living with different races here in Singapore. A country with multiple official races also means that there'll be more holiday because the different races celebrate different new years (YAY!) We also will get to understand things beyond our own culture and race, and also look into not only our own religion but also the religion of others. And basically RESPECTING other people that share this island with us.

7. Shopping

Even as a Singaporean, I love to travel overseas to places like Taipei to do my shopping. But actually, Singapore is a good place to shop too! It's a good place for budget shopping (for all you budget barbies out there) and an even better place to shop for luxury goods with the addition of MBS. For me, I'm quite good at digging for cheap and good looking clothes. Trust me when I say most of the things in my closet is from Singapore and almost none exceed $20! :) Hahah!

8. Weather

In Singapore, it's always Summer or Spring all year round, cause of our geographical location. I love that I don't need to have clothes that can only last me 3 months a year. Summer and Spring also means that we can go to the beach any time we like and any time we want. There will not be a day where it is too cold for the beach (except rainy days). It also means that we can wear flip flops out and it is still acceptable because the weather is not that cold! I love that Singapore's weather is pretty much constant (about 27~32 degC). I don't have to worry the next day the temperature would drop to a 15 degree Celsius and then go back up to 25 the next day.

9. Development

Everywhere you walk in Singapore, there's something you'll almost see for sure - CONSTRUCTION! As much as it is very annoying, I think I love Singapore because it is always developing and upgrading. To make living in Singapore a better place for even more people and travelling in Singapore more convenient. :)

10. Passport

Ask your fellow colleague from other country that is not a Singaporean, the reason why they want to be a Singaporean is because of the passport. Did you know that the Singapore passport is the world's top 5 passport? It allows Singaporeans to travel to hundred of countries visa-free! I mean, this is one of the perks about being a Singaporean. I've never applied for a visa before, but from my friends, I hear that it is VERY troublesome. So thank God that we don't have to apply for it with our little red passport! :)

I think appreciation for Singapore shouldn't come once a year on National Day. But if you know me, you'll know that I never really not liked Singapore before. Indeed this is home, truly, where I know I must be.
