Chance
Well, i went and study with zhanrong. And he told me his school's one-word essay for prelims, 'Chance' and i wrote it. As an exercise.. well. this isn't my first draft, but here it goes: "Chance" In life, we are often given chances to do things, to try out new things or simply given a second chance in a mistake that we have made. For me, I have been giving chances to many people in my life. I am slow to be angry because I always believed that people do not make mistakes on purpose and they should be given a second chance. Probably this is also why I'm always known as 'the nice one' among my friends because I'm always forgiving and kind to those around me. However, one incident changed my entire concept of second chances. That incident made me learn that in life, chances are only given to certain group of people, and not all. I have always believed that we should forgive people regardless the number of times the person makes a mistake. This is because I believe that it is from mistakes that we learn lessons. However, the society that we live in now might not have the same perspective as I do. I have a best friend, her name is Mandy. She is not the as beautiful or as good looking as the rest of my friends but we became best friends because we were the two new students in the school when we were Secodary Three. She is a very outgoing and friendly girl to me, but for some reason, many people dislike her. Being her best friend, I always thought that I know everything about her. Her everyday life and all her feelings, but I guess I was too naive then. There was a particular day in Secondary Four that Mandy was absent from school and I guessed that she was just feeling unwell or something, but after assembly, our form teacher called me out and told me that Mandy was not in school because she was caught red-handed for stealing a wallet from a shop. I was so shocked that my jaw dropped. I could not believe that she had the guts to do this, she seem like an angel to me. Despite of all this, the kind soul inside of me has already forgiven her for her mistake. I believed that she would change if she was given a second chance. I felt upset that the shop owner did not want to let her off and called the police. She was to be sent to the girls' home for a good six month. During the six months, I made time to visit her about once every month, she looked pale and weak everytime I visit her. When she was finally released, the first thing she did was to come and look for me. As it was a school day, she had to wait outside the school gate for my lessons to end. We spend the whole afternoon catching up and chatted like before. She told me that she wanted to look for a job and earn money to study in a private school. She wanted to start her life anew. I knew my second chance for her was not wasted. From the next day on, I spend almost every afternoon looking for jobs that have a reasonable pay together with her. However, it was hard as she have a criminal record. Right then, I realise that she do not have many choice. Not a lot of companies are willing to take the risk and hire an ex-convict. I thought to myself 'What happen to second chances? Are not those people normal humans too?' I mean, they are not even given a chance to prove that they want to turn into a new leaf. I think chances regardless their history and background. Chances are given for people to grow, to show who they really can be, to learn, to let people do things to their fullest potential. People might sometimes make mistakes due to a blind-eye but that mistake should not determine their future. Especially for ex-convicts, I think they should be given a second chance. As for Mandy, I asked my mother to allow Mandy to work in her shop and earn some money for education. Mandy is now persuing a degree in Business Management and this would not be possible without a second chance. Labels: Chance, Composition, English, friends, Os |
