Humans and animals

So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living moving things with which the water teems, according to their kinds, every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:21)
I suddenly thought, how powerful this one verse is. I mean imagine how many millions and billions of animals and the species there are in the whole world, and God just created all of them just like THAT. Isn't it so cool? But now, it comes to the problem with animal extinction. I felt like blogging about this topic because all of a sudden I see many post about it and I just decided like maybe I can blog about it too. (:

So just now I was doing my usual reading of news from Yahoo homepage (yes, it's one of my habit, if I have nothing better to do) and I happen to see this particular about the death of the last of Pinta Island Tortoise.

This means that the Pinta Island Tortise is officially extinct. The last Pinta Island Tortoise even had a name, the people call it "Lonesome George". The reason why it died is still under investigation, but that is not the main point. The main point is that we have to put all this to a stop, animal extinction has got to stop. Especially the tigers, elephants, sharks, rhino, panda, whale. If the animals are one by one going extinct, aren't we actually destroying God's creation?

I'm not a very big fan of animals, but I would say my favourite animal is the dolphin. To me, they seem so gentle and smart and it looks so nice. I'm not sure if anyone share the same instincts as me. Although Singapore is very strict with the import of small animals, we cannot deny the happy foodie in us will make us go for a good bowl of Shark Fin Soup.

Looks so good right? I admit, I do enjoy it, but I think there are other alternatives that we can choose from. Personally I think that SOME crab meat soup tastes equally good too! (I said some, I'm pretty picky wiht my food, that's why.) And if some people think that it is fair to kill the sharks then think about it, out of more than 500 species of sharks only 10 have been known to bite human being. Isn't it unfair? It's like you're killing all the sharks because of the problem that 10 kind of sharks did. Besides, Shark fins are tasteless, and contain high levels of toxic methyl-mercury. So all the happy foodie out there who loves Shark fins, think about it again! Chinese often serve Shark fins during a wedding dinner imagine the number of sharks that have to be killed just to serve all the bowls of soup.

Shark is just one of the example, another animal I want to talk about it the Tigers. Probably people may think that Tigers are not going to be extinct soon but they are wrong! Just because it is not seen in Singapore doesn't mean that it doesn't happen on other countries. The number of Tigers in the wild have dropped so quickly from 100, 000 to 3, 200 in the last 12 years. If it continues to fall, the chances of saving the breed would be very slim. Just think about it, next time you tell you child that they were born in the year of the tiger and they ask "Mummy (or Daddy), what is a Tiger?" then how are you going to explain it to them? Are you going to tell them that the tiger look like this

or would you wish to bring them to the Zoo and see the Tigers for themselves? Tigers are often poached to trade parts of them illegally, a very popular part would be the skin of the tiger. Tiger skins are often used for clothing and even floor mats. But honestly I feel that it's quite gross, I mean.. a real tiger's skin is laying in the middle of your living room. Ew much? The bone and the tails of the tigers are also often used for medicine too.

Ohwell, there is just so much that we can do. I mean besides donating money to World Wildlife Fund, we alsot have to support them in our small way. That is, don't but items that are made of example Elephant's trunks, Tiger skins.. and to all the happy foodies, STOP EATING SHARK'S FIN! It's our small actions and all the awareness that helps to save the animals.
